Buhari: The African Hitler |
Victor Umeh, a former Chairman of All Progressives
Grand Alliance (APGA) was arrested on Thursday, March 3, by men of State
Security Service (SSS). They arrested him from his Enugu residence and took him
to Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
On the journey, they took him through a tortuous
route – by road – which is about 548. 5km, through Makurdi and Jos. While
arresting him, the SSS men claimed they were acting on a petition from the trio
of Uche Ekwunife, a former Senator; Peter Obi, former governor; and Uzu Awka,
another politician.
They (the SSS) claimed he was the sponsor of
Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Movement for the Actualisation of the
Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB). But that could not be true, and was certainly
not the reason for the arrest. One simple reason was to intimidate and silence
him. Umeh is the candidate of APGA in one of the coming rerun Senatorial
elections in Anambra State. He was one of few politicians that somewhat made
Biafra one of their campaign issues. In the process he voiced opposition to the
continued illegal arrest and detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of Indigenous
People of Biafra (IPOB) and other Biafrans.
He used the opportunity to accuse Nigerian lawmakers
from the Biafran parts, who had kept mute over the illegal detention, torture
and trials of Kanu and his Biafran brothers. He promised that if elected he
would mount a campaign against the arrest and trial of Kanu and others; to call
for their release.
Branding him sponsor of IPOB and MASSOB was just to
get back at him for criticizing Buhari’s government; and perhaps to satisfy
Buhari’s taste for blood. Buhari has become unarguably the greatest ruler in
Africa with unquenchable taste for blood. It has become apparent that any day
without bloodshed in the expired Nigeria is a sad day for Buhari, and he will
begin to look for opportunities to bring about bloodshed. That is why blood is
being shed everywhere under his watch, and he is very well unperturbed. That is
why rather than create situations to mitigate them; he creates situations to
aggravate them. Umeh’s arrest is most probably one of those opportunities and
schemes he hoped would lead to bloodshed. Unfortunately for him no one
challenged or resisted the arrest.
One thing is certain, Umeh does not sponsor IPOB. He
is a politician, and a Nigerian politician at that. IPOB is not a friend of
politicians, not to talk of Nigerian politicians – miserable lots that live off
the suffering and hardships of their people having stolen their resources dry. IPOB
depends not on individuals, but on the people. Its strength is not on the few
pilferers; but on the masses.
Biafrans protest in UK |
It is an insult to say that one miserable politician
is sponsoring a global giant, phenomenon and wonder like IPOB. The pity is just
that Nigerian people have proven themselves to be so gullible and docile, which
is why government can concoct stupid stories and they will keep mute. Even Buhari
knows how strong, wide and deep, IPOB is. He knows the sleepless nights and
heartaches IPOB causes him all over the world. He knows the level of
intellectual input that goes into IPOB programmes and activities worldwide. And
he knows it is childish to even insinuate that one inconsequential politician
is the sponsor.
So, apart from him seeking blood to shed, another
reason for the arrest was to send clear message to other persons or groups that
might want to join the critics train, and to let them know that Buhari – the bloody
Dracula – will not hesitate to bare his fangs against them. The third reason
was that they (both Umeh’s political opponents in the coming election and
government) wanted Umeh taken out of the way before the election, so that he
would not be around to organize things.
Now, notwithstanding the reasons, not minding that
Umeh has been released, one reality today is that a dictator is practically
upon the people and sucking their blood. So the people must rise up to bring
him down; there are no two ways about it. Injustice for one must begin to be
injustice for all. The situation the people have found themselves in the hands
of this unrepentant and unreformed dictator must not be allowed to continue. A peaceful
means must be found to extricate him from the corridors of power before he sheds
more blood, or causes another bloodbath that might outstrip that of the
Biafra/Nigeria war.
Dead Biafran: Killed by Buhari's men |
If the Senate and House of Representatives continue
to do nothing in the face of this malevolent dictatorship that Buhari has
unleashed on the people, then they are jokers. It is time to remember the words
of Martin Niemöller: “First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak
out – because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists,
and I did not speak out – because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came
for the Jews, and I did not speak out – because I was not a Jew. Then they came
for me – and there was no one left to speak for me.”
Buhari must fall!
