Members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the
leadership of Nnamdi Kanu and Professor Herbert Ekwekwe have expressed
joy that their leaders successfully pushed for the recognition of Biafra
in the combat genocide association in the world.
In a statement signed by its media and publicity secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB said Biafra had been confirmed and was listed among the countries around the globe where genocide were committed. It reads: “This shows that the IPOB under Kanu is not like any other pro-Biafra group. Once we focus on a particular mission we accomplish it.
“A renowned genocide record filing Combat Genocide Association recently recognised the Biafran Genocide and listed it among other recognized genocides in the world’s history till date.
The only thing missing is who has been prosecuted for this genocide? The genocide took the lives of 3.5 million Biafrans through starvation and blockage; the Biafra/ Nigeria war 1966-1970 that ended with ‘no victor no vanquish’.
“In May 1967 the Biafran people seceded from Nigeria and declared the establishment of the Republic of Biafra. The Nigerian government decided to set up a land and sea blockade of Biafra in order to starve its population.
Between 1966 and 1970 more than two million Biafra people were murdered in Biafraland.” IPOB further noted that at the time Nigeria gained its independence in 1960, there were about 60 million inhabitants from over 250 ethnic groups, and that “the north was primarily inhabited by the Muslim Hausa- Fulani tribe; the south-west by the half-Muslim, half-Christian Yoruba tribe; and the South-East by the Christian Biafra.
“In 1965, vast amounts of oil were discovered in Oloibiri in the Niger River Delta, a region inhabited by Biafrans. One year later, a successful military coup placed Nigeria under the rule of Aguiyi Ironsi an officer from Biafra extraction.”
