Vehicular movements were interrupted and crippled on the early hours of Friday 9th October, 2020 at the boundary of Enugu and Ebonyi federal highway within Nkalagu at Ishielu LGA Ebonyi state and Idodo at Nkanu in Enugu state, following the brutality of the Nigeria police force at the boundary stop and check point on the commercial motorists applying Ebonyi Enugu route.
One of the commercial motorist who spoke with Ebonyi IPOB Media on the condition of anonymity on what ensued, explained that the Nigeria police force and other law enforcement agencies which has mounted several roadblocks as well as stop and check points along the 40 kilometres of Enugu Ebonyi federal road, with the sole aim of extorting the road users especially the commercial drivers struggling to make both end meet and put food on the table of their families, said that the police at the stop and check point this early morning teamed up to beat and assault two of their helpless colleague drivers who refused to pay the police the usual #100 on each bus per trip tribe.
He further told the media that the drivers pleaded with the police men to allow them while returning for second trip they will pay them as passengers has not complied on the transportation fare payment and it was still their first trip in the morning, this explanations of the two victim commercial drivers got the angry police men furious and they resorted to beating and molesting them, claiming the drivers were joking with them and their noble profession as quoted.
Seeing two of their colleagues on the ground being beaten mercilessly by the police, the other commercial motorists stopped and packed their vehicles, to ascertain the cause of the brouhaha, on doing so the angry commercial motorists used their vehicles to block the road, thereby causing traffic jam which lasted for many hours before the intervention of the Ebonyi state government, which quelled the situation.
The two drivers beaten to almost the point of dead by the police were rushed to an undisclosed hospital where they are taking treatments as at the time of this report. Information gathered from their colleagues has it that they're responding to treatment normally as efforts made so far to unravel personal details of the victims are yet to be successful.
