Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was illegally kidnapped and incarcerated by the Nigerian DSS upon his return to Nigeria from London in 2015. The aftermath of his arrest by the Nigerian government gave room for protests both at home and in Diaspora.

When the pressure became unbearable for the government, they granted Mazi Nnamdi Kanu bail with stringent conditions after holding him extra judicially for over two years. When Mazi Nnamdi Kanu came out, he held a few rallies, which witnessed more crowds than ever seen in the history of Nigeria. This made the government uncomfortable; they reacted in the most undemocratic way to prove those calling the president a dictator right.

The Nigerian government out of ignorance deployed her soldiers to the East, Abia state to be precise. These soldiers came with a code name "Operation python dance II", they claimed that their purpose of invading Biafraland was to clamp down on social vices in the Region, but that was a practical lie. Their intention was to get hold of the leader of the indigenous people of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, because the soldiers invaded the hometown of the leader of IPOB, maimed, killed and destroyed properties, by that creating chaos in the region that was at peace.

After the Nigerian soldiers invaded the house of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, they killed many IPOB members and kidnapped Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his parents, vehicles in the compound destroyed, animals killed. What does this imply? The soldiers came not for peace, but to kill, steal and to destroy.

The Nigerian government in collaboration with the southeast governors who already have dirty records and should not be allowed to hold any public office no matter how small had the temerity to proscribe and ban IPOB. Despite the lives they had already wasted they still went ahead to declare IPOB a terrorist organization. Those who declared IPOB a terrorist organization, what capacity have they to make such declaration? What criteria were used before the declaration?

The dreaded Boko Haram sect, who are currently terrorizing the Northeastern part of Nigeria, were declared a terrorist organization, not even by the Nigerian government, but by the USA, after the group's activities equalled that of ISIS terrorist attacks. The Fulani herdsmen that are killing people like game all over the country have not been declared terrorists; it’s peaceful IPOB that they declared terrorists.

I think the main reason the Nigerian government declared IPOB a terrorist group, is to tarnish the highly esteemed image of IPOB before the international communities, but their plans didn't grow to fruition as the international bodies didn't deem it worthy to declare IPOB a terrorist group based on the UN criteria.
