Leonard Anemene is the holder of a Nigerian passport but he does not consider himself a Nigerian. Anemene is the representative for the South American chapter of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and as such he identifies as Biafran.
There are roughly 700 members of the IPOB in Trinidad and millions more around the world, including in Malaysia, Greece and Austria, who are demanding political freedom, self-determination and independence for the region formerly known as the Republic of Biafra in southeast Nigeria.
In recent months, thousands of pro-Biafra activists have led protests in Nigeria which have increased following the arrest of the leader of the IPOB Nnamdi Kanu in October 2015. Kanu was charged with treasonable felony; if found guilty, he faces a life sentence.
